The 2008 Summer Olympics - CU Connections
Seven athletes with direct links to the University of Colorado at Boulder will be competing in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Six students and alumni and an assistant coach from CU-Boulder's track and field team are competing in the summer games Aug. 8-24.
CU-Boulder senior Jenny Barringer will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and assistant track and field coach Casey Malone will compete in discus. Former CU track and field standouts also will compete, with Kara Grgas-Wheeler Goucher running the 5,000- and 10,000-meter race; Dathan Ritzenhein competing in the marathon; Billy Nelson running the 3,000-meter steeplechase; and Jorge Torres running the 10,000-meter race. Aija Putnina, a former member of the CU women's basketball team, will play on Latvia's basketball team.
CU-Boulder is also home to many faculty experts on China's culture, history, economy, environment, media and government.
As China continues to play a more significant role on the global stage, people around the globe are becoming interested in learning more about the country's past, present and future. CU-Boulder professors in geography, history, East Asian languages and civilizations, economics and many other departments are continuing to develop their expertise on China and sharing this knowledge with students and the community at large.
Other CU researchers such as Rodger Kram of the integrated physiology department are studying the most efficient and safe ways to exercise, whether it be an athlete training for the Olympics, or just someone who wants to stay healthy.

Low-Gravity Training Machine Reduces Joint, Muscle Impacts on Runners by Half, Says CU Study (July 30, 2008)
A CU-Boulder study of a space-age, low-gravity training machine used by several 2008 Olympic runners showed it reduced impacts on muscles and joints by nearly half when subjects ran at an equivalent of 50 percent of their body weight. The new study has implications for both competitive runners rehabilitating from injuries and for ordinary people returning from knee and hip surgeries, according to Associate Professor Rodger Kram of CU-Boulder's integrative physiology department.
