It’s Homecoming Week at CU-Boulder

Take part in 2009 Homecoming, Oct. 27 through Nov. 1. The theme is "CU in Hollywood" and university festivities kick off Oct. 30 at 5:15 p.m. with a parade on the Hill, featuring CU alumnus and Homecoming Grand Marshal Hosea Rosenberg, winner of "Top Chef New York.” The CU Buffaloes take on Missouri on Saturday, Oct. 31 for this year’s Homecoming football game. The Colorado Creed and the CU Homecoming Committee are continuing their annual tradition of a Hill and university cleanup on Sunday, Nov. 1. Dan Gillmor to give Holden Lecture Nov. 2
Dan Gillmor, who put the San Jose Mercury News on the online map in 1994, will deliver the Holden lecture, "Mediactive: Why media consumers need to become active users" Monday, Nov. 2, 5 p.m. in Hale 270. Gillmor is best known as the author of "We the Media: Grassroots Journalism by the People, for the People.” He is the founding director of the new Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University's Cronkite School of Journalism. A reception at the Old Main Heritage Center will follow the talk. Free and open to the public.

Discussion with Patty Limerick and Helen Thorpe
Thursday, Nov. 5, 4 p.m. in the Center for British Studies, fifth floor of Norlin Library: “Immigration and the Practical Majority?” presentations by and conversations with Professor Patty Limerick and Helen Thorpe. Thorpe is a freelance journalist whose magazine stories have appeared in several publications, and the author of “Just Like Us: The True Story of Four Mexican Girls Coming of Age In America.” Sponsored by Center for Humanities and the Arts and Center of the American West. Astronaut Steve Swanson to visit campus Nov. 7

CU alumnus and NASA astronaut Steve Swanson will return to his alma mater for the CU/Texas A&M football game on Nov. 7. At halftime, Swanson will present two university medals he carried on STS-119, his most recent shuttle mission. During his visit to the Boulder area Swanson will appear at a local elementary school, visit with an honors physics seminar, and make a public appearance before the Saturday football match-up. For those interested in attending the game, two-for-one tickets are available on the CU Buffs website, using the code “BUFFALOES.”

CU Parents Association seeking grant program applications

Could your organization use up to $5,000 to kick-start or fund a worthy project or program? Each year CUPA awards grants for Student Affairs programs and initiatives and SOFO-registered student organizations that support one or more CUPA priorities and goals. Accessing Higher Ground conference Nov. 10-14

The role of assistive technology in education will be explored in workshops, lectures, and more during the 12th annual Accessing Higher Ground conference, Nov. 10-14 at the Westin Hotel in Westminster. Presented by CU-Boulder Disability Services, the event's hands-on labs and lectures will address the availability and benefits of accessible media and assistive technology for sensory, physical and learning disabilities in university and business settings. CU faculty and staff receive a $30 discount on registration as an ATHEN (Access Technology Higher Education Network) member at the event website.

Leadership development seminar: ethical decision-making

This seminar focuses on the importance of values in the workplace. Learn how to transform into action your values as a person, as a manager, and by representing your organization's values. Clarify personal values and apply them to ethical issues in the workplace, and consider the impact you have in setting the tone for ethical decision-making and an ethical culture in your department. Limited doses of H1N1 vaccine for those meeting Boulder County health criteria
Wardenburg Health Center has received 100 doses of injectable H1N1 vaccine for students, faculty, staff or household contacts who are 17 years of age or older and who meet very specific criteria set by Boulder County Public Health. This includes pregnant women, parents with infants under 6 months, and severely immunocompromised individuals. At this time, the criteria do not include persons with asthma or diabetes.
